Engines, Oil, and Old School Cool: The Heart of England Retro Fly-In

There’s a specific sound that defines the golden age of aeromodelling. It isn’t the high-pitched whine of a drone or the silent hum of an electric foamy; it’s the rhythmic, mechanical heartbeat of a glow engine bursting into life.

At the Heart of England Aeromodellers, we believe the “good old days” shouldn’t just live in photo albums. Our first Retro Fly-In Day may easily become one of the most anticipated dates on our calendar. It’s a day dedicated to the balsa-built beauties and the iconic powerplants that defined our hobby for decades.

It’s Not Just a Hobby; It’s a Time Machine

Walking through the pits during the Retro Fly-In feels like stepping back into a 1970s hobby shop. You won’t find many “plug-and-play” models here. Instead, the flight line is packed with:

  • Classic Pattern Ships: Sleek, screaming icons like the Curare or Ugly Stick that require a steady hand and a love for speed.
  • Vintage Sport Planes: The beloved Super 60s and Junior 60s—the rugged, dependable birds most of us spent our youth trying to master.
  • The Sound of the Past: We’re talking about those legendary OS, Enya, and Webra engines. If you miss the smell of castor oil in the morning, this is where you need to be.

More Than Just “Balsa and Glow fuel”

What makes this day special isn’t just the planes; it’s the people. The Retro Fly-In is a “low-stress, high-fun” zone. There are no trophies for the fastest lap or the most aggressive 3D maneuver.

Instead, success is measured by the quality of the “pit talk.” It’s about sharing building tips, helping a mate tune a temperamental carburettor, and telling the same stories we’ve been telling for thirty years—only getting slightly more dramatic with every retelling.

A big thanks to Jason for organising and everybody that came and helped out. Two days of cracking fun.

Join Us at the Field

Whether you’ve got a vintage masterpiece tucked away in the shed or you just want to come down and watch some classic aviation, you’re more than welcome.

  • The Vibe: Relaxed, nostalgic, and incredibly friendly.
  • The Gear: If it’s made of wood, powered by fuel, and designed “back in the day,” it belongs here.
  • The Essentials: Bring a sturdy folding chair, a thermos of tea, and plenty of fuel.
